Emancipation Day Book Giveaway: WINNERS!

To commemorate Emancipation Day on August 1st, Black Food Bookstore and Culture Shop hosted a book giveaway and gave away a copy of one of the following books to three readers:

1) How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney

2) Women's Liberation and the African Freedom Struggle by Thomas Sankara

3) Vanguard: The Advanced Detachment of the African Revolution by Chairman Omali Yeshitela

Pictured below is two (2) of our winners along with their winning entries about why Emancipation Day is important to them.

"Emancipation Day is a time to reflect on the past, how far we've come, and where we need to go. A celebration of beauty within the African Disapora. A reminder to continue the fight for all Black people's justice, freedom and liberty." -- Ava Richardson (her mother collected her prize on her behalf).

"Emancipation Day serves as the formal end to one of the most inhumane institutions in the history of humanity. Although the fight continues, this day is a small reminder of our freeedom...it's a time to reflect on how far we've come and where we need to go. We will continue to fight for justice but we will also celebrate our liberation."

Our final winner (not pictured) stated the following:

"Emancipation marks an important chapter in humanity's history. We are reminded that we come from strong people who fought for some of the rights we enjoy today. However, there's still work to be done to ensure that Black people all around the world achieve liberration."

We were so impressed by the entries of these young sisters; our future as black and brown people is in good hands!
