Happy Haitian Independence Day!
Today marks the anniversary of Haiti's independence, a revolution known to be one of the largest and most successful slave rebellions in the Western Hemisphere. In 1791, the enslaved African people revolted against their French oppressors, making it the world’s first black republic. The revolution was led by ex-slave, Toussaint L’Ouverture, who played a large role in defeating the French army in 1801. Haiti officially declared independence on this day in 1804.
